Wenger: Arsenal in talks to sign Dortmund's Aubameyang

Arsene Wenger confirmed that Arsenal is in talks to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang a day after the club secured the services of the forward’s former Borussia Dortmund teammate, Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Aubameyang has missed Dortmund’s last two matches because of disciplinary issues, which triggered speculation that the Gabon international could be on the verge of leaving before the January window closes.

After being strongly linked with the 28-year-old this month, Wenger confirmed that a move for Aubameyang is possible.

“You never know how close you are,” Wenger told reporters, according to Mark Crellin of Sky Sports.

“This is the kind of thing – he is one of the possible movements, but we have other things in mind as well. We have plenty of opportunities and the final decision is not made.

“At the moment we are not close to any deal, Aubameyang or anybody else.”

Arsenal officials reportedly travelled to Germany to discuss terms of a contract with Aubameyang’s agent, but a successful bid for last season’s top scorer in the Bundesliga is expected to be worth around €60 million.

It remains to be seen whether the price tag will be lowered as the deadline approaches, considering that Dormtund sporing director Michael Zorc admitted that speculation over a transfer has distracted Aubameyang.

“We have the impression at the moment that he (Aubameyang) has his head on other things and is not fully focused,” Zorc said.

The deal between the two sides could also hinge on Olivier Giroud going to Dortmund as part of a swap deal, but Wenger said talks have not progressed to a point where the French forward has been discussed.

Wenger is fresh off completing a swap deal that brought Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United in exchange for the services of Mkhitaryan.
